Master of Science in School Psychology

The Master of Science in School Psychology contributes to developing professionals capable of carrying out school-wide interventions to improve the quality of life of those seeking help. Available at our San Juan campus, the MS-SSP program also prepares future school psychologists to manage children and adolescents who are going through social, academic, and emotional problems.

In addition, students pursuing a  Master of Science in School Psychology take part in a 1,200-hour internship in real school settings, working directly with school personnel and students from preschool to 21 years of age, focusing on the areas of prevention, education, collaboration, evaluation, intervention, research, planning and consultation.

Program Highlights

  • Upon completing the Master of Science in School Psychology degree, our graduate students can apply for the Puerto Rico Psychology Licensing Board Exam. Upon approval, they can become licensed school psychologists. Graduate students are also encouraged to take other exams, such as the PRAXIS Exam (the United States licensing exam).
  • Students completing the master of science program will graduate with the necessary skills to work as school psychologists in public and private schools, independent practice, hospitals, state departments of education, and other educational centers.
  • The faculty members of this program have experience in areas such as crisis management and prevention, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), coping skills, behavior modification, learning difficulties, and positive learning environments, among others.
  • Early in the school psychology master’s program, students can experience a collaborative environment by working with master’s students from other specialties through integrated development and educational courses and clinics.

In Focus

  • The Master of Science in School Psychology program currently offers its courses on our San Juan and Mayaguez campuses.
  • Our Master of Science program contemplates the learning of competencies based on the standards of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). Nonetheless, it also considers social, intercultural, and intra-cultural needs, which allows our students easier mobility to apply for local and international jobs.
  • The philosophy of the Master of Science in School Psychology program is guided by the NASP Model for Integrated and Comprehensive School Psychological Services, also known as the NASP Practice Model, which represents the official policy of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) regarding the provision of school psychological services. The Practice Model allows flexibility for agencies and professionals to develop policies and procedures that meet local and socio-cultural needs while providing sufficient specialization to ensure adequate and comprehensive service delivery.
