Biography

Dr. Andel V. Nicasio is an Associate Professor at the Clinical Psychology PhD Program at Albizu University (AU) and an Affiliated Researcher at the Mental Health Disparities and Diversity Program (MHDDP) at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Nicasio received her Ph.D. from University of Central Florida (UCF) and completed her postdoctoral fellowship on trauma, telehealth and mental health disparities research at MHDDP-MUSC. She also worked at the Center of Excellence for Cultural Competence, Columbia University-New York State Psychiatric Institute as a Research Coordinator conducting mental health services research aimed at reducing health and mental health disparities for racially/ethnically diverse populations in New York state and internationally. She is a recipient of an NIH T37 Minority International Research Training Grant. Dr. Nicasio’s research focuses on (1) adapting and implementing trauma-focused interventions and (2) utilizing community-based and technology-based service delivery models to reduce barriers to access to care and increase treatment engagement and retention among trauma exposed Latinx youth and other underserved populations. Recently she received funding from MUSC for two research projects: (1) examining the transition from in-person to telehealth trauma-focused treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic in Puerto Rico and (2) Developing a training protocol for post-disaster intervention in Honduras.
