Director of the Master’s in Psychology Programs and Professor, Miami Campus
In her capacity of Program Director, Dr. Barroso provides leadership, long range planning, administration, and support to the Master’s in Psychology Programs at Albizu University. Under her supervision are:
- MS in Psychology with majors in Mental Health Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, and School Counseling-campus-based programs
- MS in Industrial and Organizational (IO) Psychology (campus-based)
- MS in Industrial and Organizational Psychology-fully (online)
Other priority areas of her work include continuous assessment of programs’ needs, engaging in outreach activities, leading key institutional committees addressing strategic planning and accreditation, as well as managing special projects, such as federal grants.
Courses taught Dr. Barroso include Cross-Cultural Counseling, Mental Health Counseling Clinical Practicum, and Organizational Development and Change.
Biography
Dr. Barroso has over 30 years of experience in the fields of counseling, disaster response, and behavioral healthcare care both as a service provider and a clinical supervisor. As a mental health counselor, she has provided psychotherapeutic services to children, adolescents, adults, couples, families, and the elderly. Her areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, trauma, depression, anxiety, behavioral problems, grief, and couple issues. She also has extensive experience in the education field, particularly in the areas of teaching, curriculum development, outcomes assessment, organizational leadership, university administration, and grant management.
Dr. Barroso is committed to facilitating enriching academic environment conditions for students from different backgrounds to thrive, succeed in meeting their educational goals, and ultimately contribute to the betterment of the increasingly diverse communities where they will serve.
Research / Research Interests
Dr. Barroso’s research interests include cross-cultural and minorities’ issues, trauma-based disorders, psychotherapy outcomes, leadership, mentoring, professional development, and academic resilience.
In addition to presenting numerous professional workshops at Albizu University on a variety of clinical topics, Dr. Barroso has presented at multiple conferences, including the Florida Mental Health Counselors (FMHCA), the Miami-Dade Marriage and Family Therapy Association, the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), the World Association of Psychoanalysis Annual Conference, ASPIRA Young Latinas Annual Conference, and the Academy of Business Research.
Academics, Education, Certifications
Dr. Barroso is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and a Board-Approved Clinical Supervisor for Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists in the state of Florida.
Dr. Barroso received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Florida International University, and her Master of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling and Ed.D. in Education with majors in Organizational and Higher Education Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.
She is a member of the American Counselors Association (ACA), the Florida Counselors Association (FCA), the Florida Mental Health Counselors Association (FMHCA), the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), and the Florida MFT Interest Network (FIN).
Recent Publications
Dr. Barroso’s most recent published conference proceeding by the Academy of Business Research was titled “Higher Education and Distance Learning: a COVID-Driven Leap of Change” (August 2021).
