Assistant Professor – Master of Speech and language program, Miami Campus

Dr. Hamel has been teaching speech and language pathology graduate courses at Albizu University since August 2016. During this time, causes she has taught include; Early Intervention, Language Disorder in Children, Articulation Disorders, Reading and Writing Disorders, Phonological Disorders, Assessment and Differential Diagnosis, and Advanced Clinical Practicum 1. As a fulltime Faculty, Dr. Hamel also serves as mentor-advisor to students in the speech and language department, as well as Faculty mentor-advisor to students in the Alternative Pathways to Education Program (APEP), an alternative admission program designed to bridge the gap between the undergraduate program and MSLP Program at Albizu University. She is also a member of the Comprehensive Examination Committee in the Speech and Language Department.

Biography

With a focus on children exhibiting varying special needs, Dr. Hamel’s professional experience in the private sector includes; rehabilitation program director, clinical director, and over 30+ years of private practice. She is a PROMPT Certified Therapist, holding the distinction of being one of only five PROMPT Certified Therapist throughout the state of Florida. She is a consultant for the Cherub Foundation for Apraxia of Speech, and participated in the development of the Chereb Foundation documentary, The Late Talkers. Dr. Hamel also consults for (MAAP) Marigolds Akola Achievement Program for Children with Learning Challenges, Uganda, Africa.

Research / Research Interests

Dr. Hamel’s current research interest focuses on Childhood Apraxia of Speech, as it relates to the impact on communication and implications for social development.

Academics, Education, Certifications

Dr. Hamel graduated Nova University in 1987 with a Doctor of Education in Child Development. Prior to receiving her doctorate, she earned her Masters of Science Degree from Boston University in Speech and Language Pathology (1976), as well as a Certificate in Advanced Graduate Studies (1976) in Varying Exceptionalities from Leslie College. Dr. Hamel is a licensed Speech and Language Pathologist in the State of Florida. She holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) awarded by the Council for Clinical Certification of the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA). Additionally, Dr Hamel is Board Certified in Special Education (B.C.S.E) awarded by the American Academy of Special Education Professionals.

Dr. Hamel is a co-author of the recent publication: Effectiveness of a Patented Nutritional Blend Reported on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Symptoms, Apraxia, and Other Conditions Involving Motor and Speech Delays: Results of a Consumer Survey.
