Goodman Center Says “Thanks” to Marty Andreas

First item on the 2013 new year wish list – “we really need art on these walls,” said Evangelina Alonso, PsyD (’99), director of the Goodman Psychological Services Center at Carlos Albizu University’s Miami campus.  ““I want our clients to look at the walls and see something that is soothing.”

CAU’s development and alumni director had seen Marty Andreas’ terrific photographs of nature from their discussions at The Church by the Sea in Bal Harbour and thought they were just what Dr. Alonso was looking for.  Would he give us access to the digital files and would he pay to print and frame them?  “Yes” and “yes” were the short answers.  Thus began the transformation of the Goodman Center’s walls – a la Martin and Leesa Andreas.

On Tuesday, November 19, CAU welcomed Marty and Leesa to the Miami campus to see the photos and share a story or two of how the images came about.  “These photos glow,” remarked Dr. Alonso.  “We wanted to create an atmosphere of calmness; these photos are just that!  Our clients, staff, faculty are grateful to be surrounded by beauty like this.”  Martin (Marty) L. Andreas was born in 1939 in Cedar Rapids, IA, and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Miami, Florida.  Marty has always known the family business of farming – from his roots in the Midwest to his 35 year-long career as a senior executive at Archer Daniels Midland Company. ADM is a world leader in agricultural processing and is one of the world’s largest processors of corn, soybeans, wheat, and cocoa.

Marty served the councils of all those products, and pioneered the development of “fructose” and “fuel ethanol.”  He continues to take interest in the use of ethanol and other sustainable energy sources.

At left: Marty Andreas shows the actual height of the 411 foot Whitewater Falls in Cashiers, North Carolina, even though the photo captures just the top half.  Whitewater Falls is the highest falls east of the Rocky Mountains. Top half of Upper Whitewater Falls in Cashiers, NC.  Lower Whitewater Falls is located across the border in South Carolina.

Currently, Mr. Andreas is president of the Andreas Corporation, which is a stock investment family business he manages with his two sons.  He is married and has four children, eight grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren.  He finds time for civic and business involvement by serving on the boards of Mount Mercy University, Trees Forever, and the Illinois Agricultural Leadership Foundation.

Mr. Andreas’ photography has been exhibited in Decatur, IL, at Milliken University in 2005, hosted by the Decatur Arts Council; at the Corner House Gallery in Cedar Rapids, IA, in 2008; and in 2011 at the Cedar Rapids Nature Center.  He has also donated his art to several schools and universities.

Carlos Albizu University is grateful to Marty and his wife Leesa for the gift of these beautiful photographs that grace the Goodman Psychological Services Center.
