Albizu University – Miami Campus ,Florida – Florida Congressman Carlos Curbelo, former U.S. Treasurer Rosario Marin (the only U.S. Treasurer ever born outside U.S. borders), Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (first Latina ever elected to Congress), and Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart, Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI), convened at Albizu University during a special meeting of The American Competitiveness Alliance on immigration reform and business growth in the State of Florida.

Dr. Etiony Aldarondo, Miami Campus Provost, recognized for his efforts to advance the mental health and well-being of Latino immigrants, said “This is the perfect place for this forum. For almost five decades Albizu University’s faculty and students have worked tirelessly to promote the health and well-being of Latino families and communities”.  Today, about two-thirds of Albizu University´s students are either first or second generation immigrants.

The distinguished panelists emphasized that immigration reform is needed for moral and economic reasons. While the needs of our most vulnerable immigrant families must be addressed, the panelists argued that our economy also needs an infusion of high skilled workers in the science and technology areas—according to Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, there is a great unmet demand for well-trained professionals in the private sector.

After congratulating Albizu University for sponsoring this forum, Congressman Carlos Curbelo called on politicians of all persuasions to stop using the immigration reform issue for personal and political gain. “This is not just an immigration issue. It’s an economic issue. In many ways, it’s an education issue too.”

The panel discussion held last Thursday August 27th is among several events the senators in conjunction with The American Competitiveness Alliance (ACAlliance) have planned for the next two months.
