Classes in research methods and in basic and advanced statistics are taken early in the program to prepare students to conduct research. From their first year of training, students are expected to participate in one or more faculty-led research groups, working with faculty members in their respective areas of expertise. In the groups, students contribute to ongoing research studies and gain experience in all stages of the scientific process, including research design, data collection, data analysis, and dissemination of findings. The research groups meet regularly to allow students a close interaction with faculty members.

Students are also encouraged to develop their own research interests and conduct independent research studies. Ph.D. students are required to defend both a master's thesis and a doctoral dissertation in the form of an empirical (quantitative or qualitative) research project.
