In the second semester of the first year, Ph.D. students begin their clinical practicum experience at the Goodman Psychological Services Center, AU’s on-campus training clinic. Under the supervision of a licensed clinical psychologist, students conduct comprehensive psychological assessments and provide group and individual interventions to low-income clients following the scientist-practitioner model of training, which integrates science and practice.
Further on in the program, students provide clinical services to the culturally diverse population of South Florida at over 35 program-approved external practicum training sites, including university and community hospitals, community mental health centers, community agencies, correctional facilities, and private practice offices. At all sites, students are directly supervised by licensed clinical psychologists.
Ph.D. students are also required to complete a pre-doctoral clinical internship during the fifth year of training. Students can apply for competitive internships nationwide at medical schools, community mental health centers, VA hospitals, university counseling centers, private hospitals, federal or state prisons, state psychiatric hospitals, and other training sites.
